What is an Agent Harness?

An Agent Harness is the runtime framework around a model. It supplies the context, tools, permissions, memory, loop, and execution environment that let a model do real agent work.

What is it?

An Agent Harness is the software layer that wraps a model and coordinates the work required to complete an agent task.

The harness decides what the model sees, which tools it may request, how tool calls are executed, when the loop continues, what permissions apply, and how the run is logged. The model remains the intelligence component inside this larger system.

Core idea: Model = reasoning and generation. Harness = the operating environment that turns those capabilities into controlled actions.

Think of it like...

Model = an employee’s brain. Harness = the employee’s office, toolbox, work rules, and workflow.

Only a brain cannot open the company systems, read an approved file, call a customer API, ask for a manager’s approval, or keep a reliable work log. The harness makes those actions possible while setting boundaries around them.

How it works

A harness sits between the user, the model, and the systems where work happens.

UserGoal, request, or task
Agent Harness

Organizes the run and controls what the model can see and do.

System InstructionsRole, policies, and task rules
ContextRelevant input and tool results
MemoryUseful information across steps
ToolsFiles, APIs, search, and actions
PermissionsAllowed scope and approvals
Agent LoopDecide, act, observe, repeat
SkillsPackaged ways of working
MCPConnections to tools and resources
LoggingTrace what happened
RuntimeExecutes the actual run
LLMUnderstands, reasons, and generates the next response or action proposal
User goal→Harness assembles context→LLM proposes next step→Harness checks and executes→Result returns to the loop

Real-world examples

CodexA coding-agent environment that combines a model with repository context, tools, terminal actions, permissions, and review workflows.
Claude CodeA coding-agent environment that connects a model to a codebase, shell tools, instructions, and controlled execution.
OpenClawAn agent-style runtime or product example that packages model access, tools, workflows, and operational controls.
DeepSeek HarnessA conceptual example of placing a DeepSeek model inside an application-controlled agent runtime.

These names are examples of agent or coding-agent environments. A brand is not the same thing as the technical concept “Agent Harness,” and a product may use more than one model or runtime.

What it is NOT

Do not confuseModelHarness
Primary jobUnderstands input, reasons over context, and generates output.Organizes the run, calls tools, controls the loop, and executes approved work.
AccessDoes not automatically read files or operate external systems.Provides selected context and connects to files, APIs, browsers, or other systems.
ControlsDoes not define the application’s complete permission policy.Applies permissions, approvals, guardrails, validation, and logging.
Same model? The same model can perform very differently in different harnesses because context, tools, permissions, loop design, and runtime execution change the system around it.

Remember this

An Agent Harness is not the model. It is the controlled operating layer around the model that supplies context, tools, permissions, memory, an agent loop, and runtime execution.
